The first step involves a meeting between you, the client & the design team, in order to figure out what is involved in the project. This meeting will result in the creation of a brief:

Style requirements

  • What kind of feeling do you want to instill with the users of the site ? Are you interested in a minimalistic approach, a contemporary, modern or classic design, etc ?

Content

  • Do you know what you want to tell your visitors ? Do you have the content required to communicate with your audience. Providing/Sharing the content of the website with the design team means that a more realistic result can be visualised and planned for.

Company branding

  • If you have a logo & a brand presence, then the custom website should complement the existing company branding such as style of logo, and colour scheme.
  • If you do not have a logo or existing brand presence then the design team will have a broader colour palette at their disposal.

Liked websites

  • Providing examples of existing websites that appeal to you, helps the design team create something that truly resonates with you.
Ideation

This stage involves taking the ideas that were outlined in the brief following the initial meeting and applying structure to them.

Wireframing

  • Drawings are sketches initially. The design team will start to organise and group required content into boxes, assigning them to specific locations on the page. This will form the basic layout of the page, these sketches are referred to as wireframes and are the skeleton of the design.

Thinking responsibly

  • There will be 2 sets of wireframes, one depicting the website on a desktop & one will depict it on a mobile device. Responsiveness is a key element throughout the entire design process.

Once the wireframes for all the required pages are complete, we are ready to apply the skin to the project. This step involves adding the graphical elements to the page.

Colour Scheme

  • You may already have a brand presence which has predefined colours associated with it, that can be translated to the website. You may also be starting out and have yet to establish a brand presence and in this case the design team will help you decide on the best choices for your company.

Typography

  • This involves deciding on an applicable font-family for your website and applying it to your content.

Interactivity

  • What effects do you want on buttons ? When a visitor hovers over the button on a desktop, effects on a mobile device, etc ?

Design review with the development team

  • When the first prototypes are complete, the design will meet with the development team for a design review. This involves reviewing each page and establishing the feasibility of the design, technically. If there are changes to be made, then it’s back to the drawing board for the designer & prototypes, until a solution has been found.

Design review with the client

  • When the design passes with flying colours it is presented to you, the client. It is at this stage that you decide the changes that are required, as agreed in your contract.

This step is the implementation of the design. Beyond coding the approved design, we need to make sure that everything works well and that all the functionalities are in place before launching the website.

Hosting development setup

  • The website will be hosted on our development server.

Plugin selection and installation

  • Matching the initial requirements, some plugins will be installed (free)
  • Other more complex plugins may require an initial investment (as required)

Coding of the customization as needed

  • Some level of customization is being done at this stage. Whether the design is based off a template or not, we would always customize the site for optimal usage and results.
