The end of footer links?

Footer links were and still are pretty popular when come times of search engine optimization. It gives more options to the search engines to find other pages, and to the users to navigate more easily. Well, that’s pretty much what a XML and HTML sitemap is for. So do we still need footer links? It seems that their popularity downhill pretty fast. Here is a really good article explaining why. I agree on most points – my only concern would be about the CTR. Sure those footer links don’t grab a lot of attention. Not that many people use them. But that’s my point, some people still do so do we want to take them away from them and force them to change their habit? They might. Now are those footer links worth our time? That’s a question I will let each designer consider for themselves.
